High incidence of Tomato mosaic and Cucumber mosaic viruses in open field crops of tomato ecotypes in Campania

Abstract: The features and performance of four tomato ecotypes (San Marzano, Corbarino, Vesuviano and Sorrento) were evaluated and compared with those of related commercial homologues (cvs Ranco F1, Faino F1, Principe Borghese, and Cuore di Bue) during spring-summer 2004 in two locations (Battipaglia and Angri) of Campania (Southern Italy). The ecotypes were compared for agronomic traits, checked visually for the incidence of viral damage to the fruits and serologically tested (ELISA) for the incidence of four tomato-infecting viruses, i.e Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Tobacco spotted wilt virus (TSWV), and Potato virus Y (PVY). ToMV prevailed in both locations, in particular in susceptible ecotypes with up to 100% of infected plants, whereas, in resistant commercial homologues ToMV was detected sporadically and with a low titre. High incidence of CMV was also detected both in ecotypes and tomato commercial homologues, in particular at Angri (93%), where TSWV incidence was greater than in Battipaglia (6.5 vs 0.0%). Results clearly showed that in absence of ToMV resistant varieties cropping of tomato ecotypes is dramatically affected by this virus. Thus, in the case of self-seed production (tomato ecotypes) it is necessary to adopt sanitary measures, as chemical treatment, to sterilize seed surfaces against viruses and bacteria. CMV is still a threat for tomato crops in some areas, as seen at Angri, where infections recur annually. Climatic conditions and plant reservoirs of the virus appear to guarantee the constant presence of CMV in the field. This fact must be taken in account for managing CMV oubreaks in these areas.
