First report of Raoiella indica Hirst (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) in Paraguay
Journal of Plant Diseases and Protection 127 (5), 715-717
Abstract: The mites, introduced through ornamentals, go unnoticed by the inspectors who are not specialists, can present a risk for the dispersion to different regions. In March 2018, in the Central Department of Asunción, Paraguay, in a nursery of plants was detected for the first time damage and presence of the red palm mite Raoiella indica Hirst (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) on leaves of Dypsis madagascariensis (Becc.) Beentje and J. Dransf., Arecaceae. It is likely that the presence of the pest is restricted yet, because this plant was imported from Brazil for garden ornamentation. Visual observations were made in other nurseries of the same locality; however, the red mite has not been detected. Therefore, it is necessary to permanently monitor the host plants, also in banana plantations in order to verify the occurrence of the red mite, and implement integrated management and prevent its spread. The mite is a threat to the production of bananas; a sector of great economic importance which benefits the small producer, it is the most consumed fruit in the country and besides it is exported.
