Bioactivity of neem, Azadirachta indica, against spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) on sugarcane

Abstract: The effect of neem, Azadirachta indica A. Juss, on some biological parameters of Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) was studied in the laboratory by using NeemAzal-T/S, Nimkol-LS, and an aqueous neem seed extract. Initially, the LC50 was estimated for nymphs. Later, nymphs fed on sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum L., roots were sprayed with the respective LC50 for each product. The adults were maintained in cages on sugarcane plants sprayed at the base with the maximum rate recommended commercially for the crop (3 liter/ha). Moistened cotton discs surrounding the base of the plant were used as oviposition substrates. The LC50 values estimated for NeemAzal, Nimkol, and aqueous extract were 0.014, 0.225, and 0.611%, respectively. There was a reduction in spittlebug longevity, regardless of sex, in relation to the control. Males exposed to the neem products, and aqueous extract showed longevity reductions of ~ 50%, whereas for females the reductions were 55-60%. The neem products and extract reduced fecundity by 75-85%. Morphological and physiological changes were observed in 9% of the eggs from individuals submitted to NeemAzal. Neem-based products, especially NeemAzal, have potential for the control of M. fimbriolata.

Estudou-se, em laboratório, o efeito de nim, Azadiractha indica A. Juss, sobre alguns parâmetros biológicos de Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae), utilizando NeemAzal-T/S, Nimkol-LS e extrato aquoso de sementes de nim. Inicialmente, estimou-se a confidence limits50 para ninfas. Posteriormente, as ninfas se alimentaram em raízes de cana-de-açúcar pulverizadas com as respectivas CL50 dos produtos. Os adultos foram mantidos em gaiolas sobre plantas de cana-de-açúcar pulverizadas, na base, com a dose máxima recomendada comercialmente para a cultura (3 litros/ha). Como substrato para oviposição, foram utilizados discos de algodão umedecido envolvendo a base da planta. A CL50 estimada para NeemAzal, Nimkol e extrato aquoso foram 0.014, 0.225, e 0.611%, respectivamente. Houve redução na longevidade das cigarrinhas, independentemente do sexo, em relação à testemunha. Machos expostos aos produtos à base de nim e extrato aquoso tiveram redução na longevidade de aproximadamente 50%, enquanto para as fêmeas as reduções foram de 55-60%. Os produtos à base de nim e extrato aquoso reduziram a fecundidade de 75-80%. Houve alterações morfológicas e fisiológicas em 9% dos ovos de indivíduos submetidos ao NeemAzal. Os produtos à base de nim, principalmente NeemAzal, possuem potencial para o controle de M. fimbriolata.
