Effect of benzene hexachloride on coffee flavour in Nicaragua
Journal of Economic Entomology 46 (1), 167-167
Abstract: Much damage was done in July-November, 1951, to green and ripening coffee berries in Nicaragua by Idiarthron atrispihum. The effect of BHC on the flavour of the finished product was investigated, because several of the dusts already used by growers to control this pest contained it. Dust containing 20% toxaphene applied at 17-20 lb/acre did not affect the taste, but dusts containg 3% BHC and 5% DDT, and 1.05% BHC and 1.75% DDT, both imparted an undesirable flavour. It is considered unwise to use BHC for the control of coffee insects in Nicaragua at present.
