Periodicity of activity and sexual response of adult Ephestia cautella (Walk.) (Lep., Phycitidae)
Journal of Applied Entomology - Zeitschrift für angewandte Entomologie 120 (6), 335-339
Abstract: Pheromone-mediated behavioural responses of adult Ephestia cautella (Walk.) and Plodia interpunctella (Hbn.) showed a bi-modal rhythm of flight activity with the main peak 5-6 h after dark and the second 1-3 h before the start of the light phase. Male attraction to a synthetic pheromone occurred over a longer period than the diurnal flight activity. Calling females aggregated on the ceiling perimeter and upper walls of a CT room, and at high moth densities male E. cautella restricted their search to the lower walls and floor, whereas at low moth densities they flew towards the females. At high moth densities, calling females increased male activity but suppressed mating.
