Seasonal occurrence and association of a gall-forming eriophyid mite and predacious phytoseiid mites (Acari: Eriophyidae, Phytoseiidae) in Japan
International Journal of Acarology 30 (1), 9-15
Abstract: Acalitus sp. (Eriophyidae) induces the formation of galls on terminal buds of the deciduous tree Carpinus tschonoskii Maxim., and some phytoseiid mites inhabit these galls. Seasonal occurrence of Acalitus sp. and phytoseiid mites on C. tschonoskii was observed in central Japan, and the role of the gall as a habitat for phytoseiid mites was evaluated. A large number of phytoseiid mites overwintered in the galls. In spring, phytoseiid mites appeared on the galls and preyed on Acalitus sp. The phytoseiid mites readily oviposited eggs on and/or in the galls and reproduced. These results suggest that the galls provide beneficial habitat for phytoseiid mites and that galls as well as leaves, may be important arboreal habitats of phytoseiid mites.
