Hylobius warreni Wood, 1957 - (Warren root collar weevil)
This weevil is a pest of pines like Pinus contorta and other conifers in North America. The larvae breed in the root collars and the roots, while the adults feed on the bark of twigs and branches. In younger host trees, attacks by the larvae can girdle a root, affect growth, and heavy infestations might result in tree death. The weevil is flightless and nocturnal, it disperses by walking.
Development of the larvae lasts around 2 years and they might pupate in spring or autumn. Adults can live up to five years, overwintering in litter at the base of trees. Adult weevils are around 10-15 mm long and dark grey or brownish in colour, interrupted by white patches.
