Hylobius abietis (Linnaeus, 1758) - (large pine weevil)
The weevil is a pest of conifers in Europe, mainly in reforestation areas. The adults feed on the bark of young trees, often killing more than half of the seedlings. The beetles are attracted to the stumps of freshly cut pine trees where the females lay eggs. The larvae can be found under the bark of the stumps and inside their roots. During the winter the adults hibernate in the soil.
The potential yearly damage across Europe in terms of killed pine seedlings has been estimated at €140 million if no control methods would be implemented. In clear-cut pine stands, the density of adult weevils can reach around 14,000 per hectare after felling.
The adult beetles have a length of around 10-15 mm and are dark brown with yellowish patches.
