Heliocheilus albipunctella Joannis, 1925 - (millet head miner)
This moth is found in the Sahel region of Africa, where it is an important pest of pearl millet. Female moths lay eggs on the developing millet heads. The emerging larvae bore into the head and feed on the growing grains, preventing their maturation. Yield losses often exceed 50%, with outbreaks of variable intensities being recorded every year. During serious infestations the pest density can reach 300,000 larvae per hectare.
