Essigella californica (Essig, 1909) - (Monterey pine aphid)

This aphid is native to North America and colonises Monterey pines and other pine species. It has been introduced into Europe (first record in France in the 1980s) and various other regions, e.g. into South America in the 1970s and Australia in the 1990s. It has become a pest in some areas like Australia.

The adults are elongated, about 1½ - 2 mm long, with a light green abdomen marked with dorsal spots. The thorax, legs, head and antennae are light to dark brown. The antennae are very short and 5-segmented. For A review of its morphology and biology see Barbagallo et al. (2005).
