Fungus found in galls of Adelges abietis (L.) (Homoptera: Adelgidae): Identification, within-tree distribution, and possible impact on insect survival

Abstract: A fungus found in galls of the eastern spruce gall adelgid, Adelges abietis (L.), was identified as Chladysporium sphaerospermum Penzig (Class: Fungi Imperfecti). Infested galls were distributed evenly within individual trees but varied in numbers among trees and sampling periods. Within infested galls, the number of infested chambers was not correlated (r = 0.20) with total number of chambers. Although infested chambers contained significantly fewer (alpha = 0.05) live insects than did noninfested chambers, evidence is insufficient to suggest direct entomopathogenic activity by C. sphaerospermum. An orbatid mite was found feeding on fungal material within infested galls; however, no evidence was found which would indicate that the mite was vectoring the fungus.
