Transmission of the granulosis virus of Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) by the parasitoid Apanteles glomeratus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)
Environmental Entomology 12 (1), 166-170
Abstract: Eighty-four percent of the parasite Apanteles glomeratus that developed to maturity in Pieris rapae infected by granulosis virus (GV) transmitted the virus to the larvae of P. rapae in which they subsequently oviposited as adults. Adult A. glomeratus did not exhibit a statistically significant discrimination between GV-treated and nontreated larvae of P. rapae, although healthy larvae were attacked first with a greater frequency than GV-treated larvae. A. glomeratus distinguished between parasitized and non-parasitized healthy hosts but did not discriminate between parasitized and nonparasitized GV-infected hosts. A. glomeratus may play a significant role in the transmission of GV in field populations of its host, P. rapae.
