Quantitative estimation of alfalfa insect populations by removal sweeping
Environmental Entomology 6 (3), 705-708
Abstract: Insect populations were estimated from the reduction in catches in successive sweep samples taken from the same area of alfalfa fields. A model is provided which assumes that the probability of collecting an insect may change with successive samples, as opposed to previous models which assume a constant probability for capture. The technique of removal sweeping provided good population estimates of some insect species, including grasshoppers (Melanoplus spp.). General consideration involved in obtaining optimum estimates are discussed.
