Biology of Tabanidae (Diptera): Mating and feeding behavior of Chrysops fuliginosus
Environmental Entomology 1 (4), 448-453
Abstract: Mating and feeding behavior of Chrysops fuliginosus Wiedemann was studied over 5 seasons on a salt marsh in Delaware. This fly has a nonhovering type of mating behavior that is governed by air temperature. In the early morning, males are active before females and begin pursuit flights from a 'waiting attitude' at 18-19°C. Initiation of coupling occurred at 19-20°C. The time of termination of coupling related to the rate of warming of the environment; rapid warming gave shorter duration of coupling. Female hunting and biting activities began at 24-25°C.
