Abundance of Ixodid ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on small mammals in forest biotopes of the middle taiga subzone of Karelia
Entomological Review 101 (2), 273-281
Abstract: The species composition and abundance of ixodid ticks on small mammals were examined in forest biotopes of the middle taiga subzone of Karelia (Gomselga Village, Kondopozhskii District, 62.07°N, 33.96°E). In 2011–2017, a total of 455 specimens of small mammals were captured in snap traps (8316 trap-days), and 889 tick specimens were collected off these mammals. The ixodid ticks recorded on 7 species of small mammals (3 species of rodents and 4 species of shrews) belonged to 2 species: Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, 1930 and I. (Exopalpiger) trianguliceps Birula, 1895, with the dominance of I. persulcatus (59%). The abundance and location of individual population groups (hemipopulations) of ixodid ticks feeding on small mammals varied depending on the biotope type. A more humid biotope, namely a deciduous forest near a stream, was more favorable for I. (E.) trianguliceps, while I. persulcatus preferred drier and more heated soils in a mixed forest on a gentle slope.
