Entomological Review 81 (9), 1245-1249
Abstract: Biology of Dermestes depressus Gebl., an obligatory symbiont of bumblebees, and its larvae are described. Larvae first feed on a mixture of nectar (honey) and pollen and then bore into cocoons and feed on dead larvae and pupae of bumblebees. Larvae of Dermestes depressus differ from all the known larvae of Dermestes in the following characters: absence of stemmata and urogomphi, presence of very fine short hairs on yellowish or pale rufous tergites, and presence of few long spicisetae on body sides and on posterior margins of abdominal tergites VII–IX. D. depressus and the closely related D. latissimus Bielz., D. olivieri Lep., D. fuliginosus Rossi, D. roubali Kalik, and D. hirticollis F. are separated in the subgenus Montandonia Jacquet, 1886, stat. n. with D. latissimus Bielz being its type species. Diagnoses of the adults and larvae of 3 the Dermestes subgenera are given.
