Diprion similis (Hartig) - (pine sawfly)

This is a palearctic species which is native to Europe and was introduced into North America (first record 1914). It is a solitary feeder and attacks pine trees, preferring Pinus strobus. It can occasionally defoliate trees. However, this is rare and the sawfly is usually under control by natural enemies.

In Europe, it has many parasitoids, for example the pupal parasitoid Monodontomerus dentipes. This species and others have been also introduced into North America against related sawfly species and have been found to also parasitise D. similis. In some regions, new outbreaks have been brought under control by transferring these parasitoids.
