Diprion pini (Linnaeus) - (large pine sawfly)
The larvae are gregarious and can cause serious defoliation of pine trees in Europe. The outbreaks may extend over several thousand hectares. The female sawfly lays its eggs inside the pine needles. The larvae do not feed on the new pine needles, but serious damage can reduce the growth of the trees and may also cause tree death.
