Dioryctria abietella (Denis & Schiffermüller)
The moth attacks the cones of spruce and other conifer species in Europe and Asia. Infestations of cone may reach 80-90% and the damage can result in more than 50% of the seeds not being filled and are unable to germinate. Females lay their eggs on young cones and the larvae bore into the cones. Mature larvae drop to the ground for pupation in the soil. The wingspan of the moth is around 3 cm.
