Dactylopius coccus Costa, 1829
This scale insect feeds on prickly pear cacti (Opuntia). It has been previously used (e.g. by the Aztec and Maya people) to produce the red dye carmine. It is now considered a pest of cultivated Opuntia species in some regions.
