Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV)
This potexvirus is widely distributed and infects a variety of different orchid species, including genera like Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium and Vanilla. The symptoms include chlorotic or necrotic sunken patches on the leaves and flowers. Plant may be stunted, and flowers are often deformed with colour-breakage, a reduced size, and a reduced commercial value. The virus is easily transmitted by tools and also spreads during the propagation of orchids.
Infections of orchids has been often reported as mixed infection with the Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV), another common orchid virus from the genus Tobamovirus. Mixed infections of CymMV and ORSV can be found in more 10% of all cultivated orchids (Ajjikuttira et al., 2005) and often result in severe symptoms.
