Cylindrocopturus adspersus (Le Conte) - (sunflower stem weevil)

This weevil is an important pest of sunflowers in parts of North America (Texas to Minnesota to parts of southern Canada). Females lay their eggs into the stems and the emerging larvae develop and pupate in the pith and the roots, causing the main damage. The adults emerge from the crop residues the next spring and also feed on sunflowers.

The adults are about 5 mm long, dark brown with many light patches. Management is difficult and includes delayed planting, crop rotation and insecticide application when a high abundance of egg-laying females has been detected.

Vernacular names
• English: sunflower stem weevil
• Français: charançon de la tige du tournesol
