Cylas brunneus (Fabricius)
C. brunneus is similar in appearance, biology and distribution to the African sweet potato weevil (Cylas puncticollis). Both species are often found together and referred to as "African sweet potato weevils". In contrast to C. puncticollis, C. brunneus adults are smaller (5-7 mm long) and the thorax is dark reddish, reminiscent of Cylas formicarius.
C. brunneus is found in East and West Africa. The adults feed on the leaves, stems and tubers. The larvae burrow into the stems and tubers and cause the main damage. Economic losses by C. brunneus and C. puncticollis together can exceed 50%.
