Curculio elephas (Gyllenhal) - (chestnut weevil)
The weevil is a pest of chestnuts in Europe and also infests oak acrons. The female lays its eggs into developing nuts where the larvae feed over a period of about 2 months. The mature larvae leave the nuts in autumn and pupate in the soil. The young adults emerge from the soil after around 9 months.
