Cryptotermes cavifrons Banks, 1906

This termite is endemic to Florida and some neighbouring Caribbean islands. It has been also intercepted on a wooden boat entering Australia (Scheffrahn & Crowe, 2011) and is therefore of quarantine concern. The termite lives mainly in dead trees and logs, and has not been frequently reported from wooden structures. Compared to other Cryptotermes species, it seems to have a higher moisture requirement.

The soldiers are 4-5 mm long and the winged adults around 9 mm, including the wings. The main caste of Cryptotermes species are the pseudergates which take up the tasks of the worker caste of other termite groups like feeding the brood, the queen, king and the soldiers. Pseudergates are actually immature termites and some of them develop into the winged form at a later stage.
