Cryptorhynchus lapathi (Linnaeus, 1758) - (poplar and willow borer)

This weevil is believed to be native to temperate parts of Europe and western Asia, but has been also recorded from North America (first record 1882) and from eastern parts of Asia. The main host plants are poplar and willow, but alder and birch may be also attacked.

Eggs are laid into holes chewed by the female into the bark. The emerging larvae bore into the wood of stems and branches, forming irregular galleries and weakening the trees. The weevil can cause serious economic losses to poplar forests. The adult beetles cause less damage, feeding on leaves and the bark of twigs.
