Cryptophlebia peltastica (Meyrick, 1921) - (litchi moth)

This tortrix moth is found in many parts of Africa, including outer islands like Madagascar or Mauritius. It has been also recorded from several other regions like the Pacific island Guam, where it is probably introduced. C. peltastica attacks the fruits of lychee and citrus. It also infests the pods of several plants of Fabaceae like tamarind or Acacia. Adults have a wingspan of 13-20 mm.

On lychee, females lay their eggs on young fruits with a diameter of around 3 mm. The emerging larvae bore through the skin and feed on the fruit and seeds, eventually pupating inside the fruit. In Mauritius, up to 20% of the fruits can be damaged (Manrakhan et al., 2008).
