Cossus cossus (Linnaeus 1758) - (goat moth)
This large moth is common in Europe. The larvae bore into the trunks of various trees like fruit trees, causing considerable damage which can result in death of the trees. Trees frequently attacked include apple, cherry, pear, plum, olive, chestnut, elm, oak, poplar, lime and maple.
The name "goat moth" refers to the smell of the larvae. The development of the larvae takes 2 or more years. The moths are brownish gray and the forewings are crossed by fine black lines. The larvae are red to dark red.
