Sclerotinia trifoliorum Erikss. (1880) - (clover rot)

The fungus causes a widespread disease of clover, alfalfa and other legumes in temperate regions. It infects the host plants in autumn and the disease develops during the winter and spring. Infected plants rot, wilt and die. The fungus then forms sclerotia, around 5 mm large, which are first white and later turn black. They can remain dormant in the soil for several years. In autumn, the sclerotia produce funnel-shaped fruiting bodies and large numbers of ascospores. The ascospores are about 15 µm long and disperse through the wind. The use of resistant varieties is usually the most appropriate management option.
