Chrysomphalus aonidum (Linnaeus, 1758) - (Florida red scale)
This armoured scale insect is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as in greenhouses in temperate parts of the world. It is believed to have originated from Asia and has been accidentally introduced with crops into other regions. C. aonidum is polyphagous, attacking many crops like citrus, other fruit trees or ornamentals.
It has typically caused outbreaks after being introduced into an area. These have been mainly controlled through the introduction of beneficial insects like predators and parasitoids. An example are ectoparasitoids of the genus Aphytis.
