Caryedon gonagra (Fabricius, 1798)

This bruchid beetle attacks the seeds of tamarind and several other plants. Its native distribution extends from north-eastern Africa to southern Asia and Australia, but it has been introduced into other countries with the trade of tamarind pods.

C. gonagra has been often confused with the groundnut pest Caryedon serratus. It does not infest groundnuts in the field, but can be reared on them under laboratory conditions. Both species are externally very similar but can be distinguished by the structure of the male genitalia (Delobel et al., 2003).
