This genus of bruchids contains around 20 species which attack pods and seeds of legumes from the group of bean plants (tribe Phaseoleae, family Fabaceae). Several are important storage pests like the cowpea weevil or the oriental cowpea bruchid.
The species live in tropical and subtropical regions but can be also found in legume stores of temperate regions if the temperature is suitable. They require little moisture and can breed in dry beans. Among other features, the species of this genus have a single tooth on both internal and external margins of the hind femora.
