Bupalus piniarius (Linnaeus, 1758) - (pine looper)

The pine looper is found in Europe and Western Siberia, where the larvae feed on pine needles. It mainly infests Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), less often other pine species or other conifers like Douglas fir. In some areas like in parts of Western Siberia large-scale outbreaks can develop, covering tens of thousands of hectares (Demidko et al., 2021). There is one generation per year with the adult moths emerging from the pupae in spring. The mature caterpillars drop to the ground in autumn enter the soil and pupate in the winter.
