Biological notes on the tobacco cricket, Brachytrupes membranaceus (Dru.) (Orthopt., Gryllidae), in Southern Rhodesia
Bulletin of Entomological Research 49 (1), 49-57
Abstract: The life-history of Brachytrypes membranaceus, a pest of tobacco, maize and other crops in Southern Rhodesia, is outlined. It is nocturnal in habit and lives underground. The burrow system and the insect's method of collecting food for storage below ground are described. Eggs are laid in the burrows and young nymphs crawl away and start their own separate ones. Plant damage is caused chiefly by the burrowing.
