Enumerating populations of adults of the Red Locust, Nomadacris septemfasciata (Serville), in its outbreak areas in East and Central Africa
Bulletin of Entomological Research 49 (2), 273-285
Abstract: A method is described for estimating the total numbers of adult Nomadacris septemfasciata over large areas. It is based on counting the numbers that fly up in a two-yard strip in front of a moving vehicle. Sources of error are considered. Observations are reported on the congregation of scattered locusts to form swarms, and on dispersal just before egg laying. A report is given from counts by this method of the changes in the total populations in part of the North Rukwa outbreak area from 1953 to 1956. Natural mortality during this period is discussed.
