Epinotia aporema (Walsingham, 1914) - (bean shoot borer)

This small tortrix moth is an important pest of legumes in South America. It is found from southern North America in the north to Argentina in the south. Soybeans and beans can experience serious damage.

The larvae fold and roll the leaves and older larvae also bore into the stems or the pods. Buds are also often attacked, reducing the growth of the plants. There are several generations per year with one generation lasting 5-6 weeks. Attempts have been made to develop a granulovirus for biological control (Manzán et al., 2008).
