Brachyponera chinensis (Emery, 1895) - (Asian needle ant)

The ant is native to Asia and has been introduced into North America from Japan in the 1930s. It has not been prominent until around the turn of the century when it became widespread in south-eastern parts of the United States. It is now common in urban and natural environments, replacing other species. In addition, it can sting humans and may cause serious swellings and skin reactions.
