Botrytis virus X (antagonist) (BotVX)
This virus infects the very common plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea. Virus-infected fungal strains have a reduced virulence and produce fewer sclerotia. The virus can be vertically transmitted through the spores of the fungus. Horizontal transmission through hyphal fusion is also possible.
The virus has flexuous, rod-shaped particles with a length of about 720 nm and a genome of around 7 kb. It has been assigned to the genus Botrexvirus and the family Alphaflexiviridae.
