Distribution and seasonal abundance of Otiorhynchus schlaeflini Stierl. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) in the soil of a vineyard
Bollettino del Laboratorio di Entomologia Agraria 57, 113-121
Abstract: The distribution and seasonal abundance of larvae, pupae and adults of Otiorhynchus schlaeflini Stierl. in the soil of vineyards was examined in the area of w. Peloponnesus throughout the period from the end of 1993 till end of 1994. The results showed that O. schlaeflini completes one generation per year in the area of the study and overwinters both as larva and adult. Larvae pupate early in spring, adults emerge at the end of March and in April and their population is kept at similar levels till October. Although the distribution of larvae, pupae and adults in the soil proved seasonally dependent, they are most commonly recorded in a distance of 15 - 45 cm from the vine trunk and in the upper 10 cm of the soil. Those results are useful in the understanding of the life cycle of this pest, the adopting of the right sampling strategies and in the selection of the most appropriate time and site to apply chemicals or biological control. agents, for a more successful management of this species.
