Procedures for mass rearing the buffalo fly, Haematobia irritans exigua De Meijere (Diptera Muscidae)
Australian Journal of Entomology 35 (1), 77-79
Abstract: Procedures are described for mass rearing the buffalo fly, Haematobia irritans exigua. Adult flies are fed on bulls in a controlled environment room. The eggs are laid on the dung which is incubated for 2 d and then reconstituted into 2-3 L pads in a room at 30°C 80% R.H. Average daily production was 3,700 pupae (maximum 17,000) for each bull over a 6-month period, while over 7 years the number of flies on each bull averaged 1,000-2,000 with the introduction of 200 puparia/bull/day.
