Atta cephalotes (Linnaeus)

This species of leaf-cutting ants is found in Central- and South America and is a pest of citrus, other crops, range lands and forests. Plants are often defoliated. The plant material removed is used to cultivate the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus in fungus chambers within the nests. The fungus is then used as food by the ants.
