Asobara japonica (parasitoid) Belokobylskij, 1998
This wasp is an important larval parasitoid of the spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) in some parts of eastern Asia (Wang et al., 2021). It is regarded as a possible candidate for classical biological control programs against this pest and compares favourable with several other parasitoids tested (Wang et al., 2021).
A. japonica prefers young Drosophila larvae as hosts (1-3 days old) and the development time of the parasitoid, from egg to adult emergence, is around 3½ weeks. Its development is better in Drosophila suzukii compared to D. melanogaster. Apart from these 2 host species, it can also develop in other drosophilids (Wang et al., 2021).
