Aproaerema modicella Deventer, 1904 - (groundnut leafminer)
This moth is found in southern Asia and has been accidentally introduced into southern Africa (first record in 1998). It subsequently became widely established in the southern part of the continent. A. modicella is an important pest of groundnuts, soybean and other legumes. Outbreaks can develop and yield losses on groundnuts can reach 50%.
The larvae initially mine the leaves, but late instars leave the mines and roll or tie the leaves. The adult moth has a wingspan of 8-10 mm with a brownish colouration and two lighter spots on the forewings.
