Aphidoletes (predators) Kieffer, 1904
The genus contains predatory midges that feed as larvae on aphids and adelgids while the adults feed on nectar and honeydew. The most common species is Aphidoletes aphidimyza which is widespread and feeds on a large variety of aphid species. For oviposition, the adult midges select plants that are infested with aphids. The larvae only need to prey on a few aphids to complete their development, but usually kill many more than necessary, often discarding their prey.
