Aphelenchidae - Aphelenchus avenae Bastian, 1865
The family Aphelenchidae includes soil-inhabiting and fungus-feeding species of nematodes which are characterized by a large median bulb. The family is based on Aphelenchus avenae which is widely distributed and can be found in the soil and on roots, but also on above-ground plant parts like leaf sheaths.
There is general agreement that A. avenae is mainly a fungus feeder, but it can be also cultured on callus tissue of various plants. It is not clear to what degree it damages roots and other plant tissue in the field.
