Seasonal development and distribution of Unaspis euonymi (Comstock) on Euonymus japonica L. shrubs
Anzeiger für Schädlingskunde, Pflanzenschutz, Umweltschutz 69 (5), 103-105
Abstract: During the years 1990-1992 the seasonal development of Unaspis euonymi (Com.) (Hom., Diaspididae) on ornamental shrubs of Euonymus japonica L. was followed. The shrubs were at the beach park of the city of Thessaloniki and that of the University campus. Branches of E. japonica were collected and observations of the insect's development took place in the laboratory. Furthermore, sticky tape-traps were placed on the shrubs where the crawlers were trapped and counted.
The first eggs were observed in late April and the first crawlers in early May. Crawlers were also observed in early July and mid September. The peak of crawlers was observed 8-10 days after the observation of the first ones. More females than males settled on the stems whereas the opposite was observed on the leaves. The male/female ratio was 1:4.5 on stems, 2.5:1 on abaxial and 2.3:1 on adaxial leaf surface.
