Abstract: Mass breeding of cockroach species of hygienic importance is a prerequisite for the evaluation of the biological effectiveness of products and methods used to control cockroaches of hygienic importance. Apart from the relationship between cost and benefit, also the efforts to improve animal welfare ask for the abandonment of a permanent mass keeping of animal species for experimental purposes and its replacement by 'maintenance breeding with excess' as defined byIglisch (1984).
Based on practical experience over many years, the life cycle of Blatta orientalis under laboratory conditions, breeding installations and vessels, the technical material needed for raising adolescent and adult stages, the collection of oothecas as well as care, expenditure in terms of labor, and costs are described. The controllable system of 'maintenance breeding with excess' is illustrated as a cycle.
