Annales de la Société Entomologique de France 15, 319-343
Abstract: Catantops haemorrhoidalis is a minor crop pest in West Africa. The identity of the species is described with reference to taxonomic position, morphology, number of ovarioles (38 ± 1), larval polychromy, and weight gain according to sex and instar. The distribution of C. haemorrhoidalis in Africa and its regional and local distribution in the central zone of Niger and in Upper Volta are described, and its habitat and preferred biotopes are defined. The life cycle is presented in relation to ecological factors. The seasonal population dynamics of local populations in two ecological zones (guinea-sudanian and sudano-sahelian) are described and compared. The population dynamics of this species in West Africa generally are considered in relation to ecological constraints and biological adaptations to an unstable environment, such as long distance flight capacity and imaginal diapause. A schematic representation of the annual cycle and its variations in different eco-climatic zones is shown. The economic importance of C. haemorrhoidalis is reviewed, with a consideration of the factors leading to outbreaks, and reference to survey and control.
