Anguina agrostis (Steinbuch, 1799) Filipjev, 1936 - (bent grass seed gall nematode)

This seed-gall nematode is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere. It feeds on grasses, especially Agrostis and attacks the developing seeds, forming galls. It has been originally described from Agrostis capillaris, but has been also reported to infest a variety of other grasses.

The young second stage juveniles (J2) infect mainly young grasses and feed on them externally until inflorescences are formed. They then penetrate the flowers, become sessile and stimulate the formation of the seed galls. The galls are elongated glumes (around 4 times longer than normal) which become filled with the nematodes. Yield losses may be as high as 50%. There is only one generation per year.
