[Effective sections and sensitive characters of courtship signals in the rice brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål)]
Acta Entomologica Sinica 47 (4), 479-484
Abstract: Different sections of its courtship signals and their combinations were presented to the rice brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål). Also, synthesized signals with different pulse repetition frequencies and main vibration frequencies were tested. The results showed that the acoustic sections consisted of regular and continuous multi-pulses were effective in planthopper mating recognition. The pulse repetition frequency was an important sensitive signal character in the planthopper's mating choice. The sensitive range of pulse repetition frequency were narrow, 70-90 Hz for the female and about 22 Hz for the male; but the sensitive rangesof their main vibration frequency were wide, 200 - 1,700 Hz for the female and 100 - 300 Hz for the male.
